As you know, here at In Water we love a big installation! So when we received a call from the guys at 2LK to discuss a major event in Cologne - an event that required non-disclosure agreements and undisclosed clients - you can imagine we got a little excited!
With all the necessary documents signed, sealed and delivered 2LK spilled the beans about Photokina 2018 and the big display Canon were after. Well we jumped at the chance, of course!
After numerous design meetings with 2LK and the client to brainstorm ideas, we settled on a futuristic design with bold colour and texture - Taking inspiration from James Cameron’s Pandora - World of Avatar
The primary element of the display was to be a ‘Live Creation Experience’ that would enable visitors to the show explore movement, video and portrait for through Canon Cameras.
For this, we created a suspended, rotating display of vibrant textured flowers and foliage ‘growing’ from a large piece of driftwood
The second element was to create a ‘Macro Experience’ within a harsh environment with direct spotlights, warm air and no natural sunlight. The purpose of this element was to enable visitors to shoot up close photographs with focus on detail and texture.
The logistics behind this amazing job were a challenge, but with the help of our wonderful suppliers and the lovely team at 2LK we were able to get the majority of the flowers, props and kit sent directly to the venue. We then sent two teams over to Cologne, one to set up before the show opened and then a second team took a long drive out with refresh flowers later in the week. Luckily our team all get on well so 12 hours in a van was no problem at all.
Naturally, Creative Director Rob couldn’t help but have a little fun with the suspended display before the show opened
